Beyond a lack of specific policy differences, it’s almost impossible to draw a high-level ideological distinction between Senators Clinton and Obama: neither is running as an ideological alternative to the other, and if one looks at their respective voters, a clear left- right fault line between their supporters does not emerge. If one were forced to describe it, you would have to say that Senator Obama is drawing votes both from Senator Clinton’s left and her right, but even that would oversimplify things and not really capture the dynamic.
Instead, the Democratic contest is much more a battle over leadership, personal qualities, experience and the delicate matters of race and gender. In a lighter vein, one observer has likened the contest to the
choice between a Mac and a PC; others have said it is about an “inspiration gap”; still others have called it a fight for the “heart and soul” of the party, without being particularly clear about what that means.
